McClellan Park Real Estate, West of the Trail, Sarasota
McClellan Park, Sarasota’s “garden spot” was the how the development was referred to in the 1916 sales ads. One of the oldest developments in Sarasota, this 56 acre, 1916 era community is located just south of Harbor Acres , north of Bayview and Cherokee Park. Paradise Shores is directly west of McClellan Park along Sarasota Bay.
At the time, the subdivision offered a unique theme for Sarasota. Sisters Katherine and Daisietta McClellan, hired architects specializing in landscape design to divide the park. It was these architects that designed the sweeping roads that provided lot owners beautiful views of the bay.
The Sarasota Times commented that Katherine McClellan, a professional photographer, was “always keeping in mind the artistic as well as the practical.” Shell aggregate curbs and gutters, shade trees, and pergolas framing the entrance from Orange Avenue gave McClellan Park a romantic feel.
Before the area became a McClellan Park, the area had seen a lot of Native American activity, in fact the Original McClellan Park School was built upon an ancient Indian mound. It was this Indian mound that inspired Katherine McClellan to use Native American names for the roads and yacht basin.
Architecture in McClellan Park today is an eclectic mix of Craftsman bungalows, Spanish and Mediterranean styles as well as Tudor Revivals. Many of the original homes built in the 1920’s and 1950’s still survive today.
